So, you wanna know where it all began? Melbourne's now very established Cafe Culture was pretty much birthed by this chap - Con Christopolous. Mr C has sprinkled Melbourne with all manner of swanky, sassy and sometimes deliciously seedy wee cafe haunts and bars including Journal, Gill's Diner and Commercial Bakery, The Supper Club and Siglo. For this we should indeed thank him. One of his early child prodigies, Degraves Espresso, is still one of Melbourne's most iconic cafes in the land of the latte, although the food, coffee and service can be slightly unreliable. Not Con's fault though, having released the apron strings a few years back and let the boy wonder fly off on his own. He's now something of a cocky teenager. Still, for the nostalgic amongst us it's a damn fine spot to sit and muse.
